Scholarship Guidelines

 

Eligible participants for scholarships must be natural, adopted or stepchildren of Arizona workers permanently or fatally injured because of a work-related accident or occupational disease. Other relatives of the deceased/injured worker are not eligible.

Children ages 16 through and including 25 years of age are eligible. Eligible age is age determined based on age of recipient at the time of the request to the Board.

The parent’s injury/death must have resulted in a substantial decline in the family’s income, which impedes the student child’s pursuit of his or her educational objectives.

Scholarships may be used for both public and private educational institutions both within and outside the State of Arizona. Scholarship awards can be used for the following types of accredited institutions:

  • Trade/Vocational School

  • Industrial/Commercial Training

  • Junior College/Community College

  • College-Undergraduate / Graduate

Scholarship awards cannot be used for full tuition work-study programs.

Scholarships may be used for the following. Receipts and documentation are required for each item:

  • Tuition

  • Fees

  • Books

  • Room & Board

  • Miscellaneous expenses (approved by the Board)

In addition, in a situation where a high school student would be hindered in his/her effort to successfully complete high school due to the financial impact of the work-related injury/fatality, Kids’ Chance may award grants to assist the high school student and his/her family to allow the student to successfully complete his/her high school education.

Scholarships are awarded based on defined sessions of the Institutions requirements. The recipient must verify his/her ongoing successful academic/educational performance during the course of the grant year if requested to do so by Kids’ Chance of Arizona.

The amount of available award will be based on specific circumstances pertaining to the individual applicant and /or available funding.

Applicants must apply online (Click here to apply) and include the following information for consideration:

  • High School transcript and/or most current University transcripts showing cumulative GPA.

  • Information on injured or deceased parent

  • Verification of school attendance and course schedule

  • Estimated cost of registration, tuition, textbooks, living expenses and other costs

    • One page letter outlining educational goals and the need for financial assistance.

  • Financial information including the e application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and/or current year’s SAR (Student Aid Report)

Returning scholarship recipients are required to provide an update each semester to be reconsidered for an additional monetary award. Applicants must apply online (Click here to apply) and include the following information for consideration:

  • Updated financial information including the renewal free application for Federal

  • Student Aid (renewal FAFSA) and/or current year’s SAR (student Aid Report) once a year.

  • Documentation of the preceding semester/year’s academic performance, including cumulative grade.

  • Course enrollment sheet confirming course schedule meets minimum credit hours (12 credits) / be a full-time student.

  • Explanation of any extenuating or mitigating circumstances relevant to the student’s application for additional financial aid (if applicable).

Kids’ Chance of Arizona scholarships will not be awarded to individuals who are related, either by birth, adoption, or marriage to members of Kids’ Chance of Arizona Board of Directors and/or Kids’ Chance of Arizona Scholarship Award selection committee.

All scholarship applications, attachments, financial and personal information is considered the sole property of the applicant, parent (or legal guardian) and Kids’ Chance. This information is kept private and is not subject to any public information requests.

Kids’ Chance of Arizona is a non-for-profit organization, and all Board members serve on a volunteer basis. All funding of scholarships is through direct donations from industry organizations, public or through fund-raising efforts by Kids’ Chance of AZ. Money for scholarships is based on the students’ need and the amount of funds available at the time the application is reviewed.

The Board reserves the right to refuse scholarship applications, award partial funds or award all requested monies based on the student’s need; the family’s financial situation; the severity of work-related injury/disease (including fatality); and the reasonableness of the request.
